Pine Gap – Serving U.S. Militarism for 50 years
1st October
Saturday, at 8:30 AM – 5 PM
Venue
The Chifley, Alice Springs Resort, 34 Stott Terrace, Alice Springs
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the US military communications base at Pine Gap. This base is one of a number of US secretive military installations on Australian soil which are central parts of the US war fighting machine, and yet over which the Australian Government cannot easily exert control. Pine Gap is one of the major US military communications bases for controlling its deadly drones around the world.
At this conference we aim to understand and assess the continued role of US bases and troops in Australia; to raise serious questions about the role of secretive Pine Gap in US wars, the ANZUS treaty, the annual AUSMIN talks, and the Five Eyes Intelligence Network, by which successive Australian Governments have played a subservient role to US military offense strategies; and to research, collect and disseminate facts, and develop campaigns by which the many participating organisations in IPAN can build a broad public dialogue around these issues, as part of our campaign for an independent and peaceful Australia, including an independent foreign policy for Australia.
Topics will include:
- 50 years of Pine Gap: Its changing role
(see our fact sheet, and share this petition) - How US facilities in Australia are used in current wars
- The role of drones in modern warfare
- Australian foreign policy in relation to the US
- Resisting mass surveillance
- The impact of a military presence on Indigenous peoples
- Sovereignty, Secrecy and Democracy
- Engaging in a movement for change
This is an opportunity to:
- Meet activists from Guam, Philippines, Japan & NZ
- Dialogue with community groups from every State
- Learn from expert researchers
- Protest non-violently at Pine Gap
- Plan our future national campaign
